Grinding Coffee

How to Grind Coffee
The best coffee flavor is beans that are recently roasted, and ground just before you brew. You have to choose the right grind to match how you brew coffee. The finer the grind, the better within the range that matches your brewer type. Too course and you don't get all the flavor; too fine and it can clog the filter or even get into the cup.

Use a medium grind for a regular ('drip') coffee maker; use a fine grind for espresso, and a courser grind for a French Press brewer.

There are two types of grinders: Burr, and blade.

A blade grinder has a spinning blade, so really its cutting up the bean, not grinding. They are less expensive, and are fine for a drip coffee. But you have very little control over the courseness of the grind. Some people claim they can taste the difference between a blade grinder and a Burr grinder.

A Burr grinder crush the beans between two surfaces. How close they are together determines the courseness of the grind. The flavor is better because a burr grinder does not heat the beans as it grinds; a blade grinder can generate some heat, especially if it runs longer.

All high end coffee is ground by a burr grinder. They come in all sizes. For the best tasting cup of drip coffee at home, get a Burr Grinder and a French Press. You can also toss in a bit of cinnamon into the grounds for a nice change of pace.
