Rascal had to Give Up Coffee - So he turned to Apples!

4/13/2023

His obsession with Apples brings him trouble... but also, a new friend!

Rascal was a friendly and curious Golden Retriever who lived with his family on a small farm. Rascal loved two things in particular - coffee, and apples.  But sneaking a drink of that black liquid his owners were always drinking - and getting really sick to his stomach - he realized he could never have coffee again!

So he turned to apples. He loved the taste of them, the texture of their skin, and the way the juice would drip down his chin as he ate them.

One day, Rascal decided to explore the apple orchard at the edge of the farm. He sniffed around the trees, trying to find the ripest and most delicious apples to eat. But as he was jumping up to reach a particularly tempting apple, he slipped and fell to the ground. Rascal shook himself off and looked around, embarrassed. But then he noticed that he had landed on a hornet's nest.

The hornets swarmed around Rascal, stinging him all over his body. Rascal yelped in pain and tried to run away, but the hornets followed him. He ran through the orchard, trying to shake them off, but they kept stinging him. Eventually, Rascal made it back to his house, covered in angry hornets.

His family rushed him to the vet, where he was treated for multiple stings. Rascal felt embarrassed about what had happened, but he couldn't shake his love for apples.

A few weeks later, Rascal's family decided to bake an apple pie using some of the apples from their orchard. Rascal watched as they peeled and sliced the apples, the sweet scent of cinnamon and sugar filling the kitchen. As the pie baked, Rascal couldn't help but drool, imagining the delicious taste.

But when the pie came out of the oven, it was much bigger than they expected. As they were trying to move the pie to the counter, Rascal jumped up and knocked the whole thing onto the floor. The pie shattered into a thousand pieces, and Rascal dove in, licking up as much as he could.

But as he ate, Rascal started to feel sick. His stomach churned, and he realized that he had eaten too much. He curled up on the floor, moaning in discomfort.

His family took him to the vet again, where he was treated for overeating. Rascal felt ashamed that he had caused so much trouble over his love for apples.

Finally, one day, Rascal decided to go on an adventure. He roamed around the farm, sniffing out any apple trees he could find. Eventually, he stumbled upon a tree that was bursting with ripe, red apples. Rascal couldn't resist. He jumped up and began to pick the apples, one by one.

But as he was eating the apples, he heard a growl. He turned around to see a large dog, baring its teeth at him. This was the neighbor's dog, and he was fiercely protective of his apple tree.

Rascal knew he had made a mistake. He tried to back away slowly, but the neighbor's dog lunged at him. Rascal ran as fast as he could, his heart pounding with fear.

But the neighbor's dog chased him, barking and snapping at his heels. Rascal knew he couldn't outrun the dog, so he did the only thing he could think of: he turned around and faced the dog head-on.

The neighbor's dog hesitated for a moment, surprised by Rascal's bravery. But then he lunged again, and the two dogs began to wrestle.

It was a fierce fight, with both dogs growling and biting. But eventually, Rascal emerged victorious. The neighbor's dog retreated, and Rascal was left standing in front of the apple tree, panting and bruised.

That's when Rascal noticed something he hadn't seen before: the neighbor's dog was wearing a collar with a tag.  As Rascal approached, the other dog was now sitting on his haunches and watching him closely. As Rascal got closer, he could see that the tag on the collar had an engraving: "Max.""Hi, Max," Rascal said, wagging his tail. "I'm Rascal. I didn't know this was your apple tree."

Max looked at Rascal for a moment before nodding his head. "It's okay," he said. "I guess I should have kept a better eye on it. You really like apples, don't you?"

Rascal nodded eagerly. "I love them! They're my favorite thing to eat."

Max smiled. "I like them too. That's why I was so protective of my tree. But you're pretty brave, Rascal. Most dogs would have run away from me."

Rascal felt a rush of pride at Max's words. He had always thought of himself as a friendly dog, but he had never considered himself brave before.

"Thanks, Max," he said. "I just didn't want to get in trouble for stealing your apples."

Max chuckled. "It's okay, Rascal. I don't mind sharing. In fact, I have an idea. Why don't you come over to my house sometime? I have an apple tree there too, and we could share some apples together."

Rascal's tail wagged so hard it felt like it might fall off. "I would love that, Max!" he exclaimed. "Thank you!"

And so, Rascal and Max became friends. They would often meet up in the orchard and share apples, taking turns picking the ripest and most delicious ones. Rascal no longer had to sneak around, trying to find apples to eat, because he had a friend who was willing to share with him.

Rascal's family was happy too, knowing that he had found a friend and a new source of apples. And every time they would see Rascal and Max sitting under the apple tree, munching on apples together, they couldn't help but smile.

In the end, Rascal's love for apples had brought him some unexpected challenges, but it had also brought him a new friend and a sense of bravery he had never known before. And every time he ate an apple, he felt grateful for the adventure it had taken him on.

Who makes the best roasters?

Here is a list of the top 5 coffee roasting machine manufacturers. Note: this list is not 'monetized', we don't make any money from posting this.  Enjoy!

  1. Probat: Probat is a German company that has been producing coffee roasting machines since 1868. They are known for their high-quality machines that are built to last. Probat's machines offer precise temperature control and consistent roasting results, making them a favorite among professional roasters. However, their machines tend to be on the expensive side.
  2. Diedrich: Diedrich is a US-based company that has been making coffee roasting machines since the 1970s. They are known for their innovative designs and attention to detail. Diedrich's machines offer precise temperature and airflow control, allowing roasters to create complex and nuanced roasts. However, their machines can be expensive and may require more maintenance than other brands.
  3. Loring: Loring is a US-based company that specializes in low-emission coffee roasting machines. Their machines use a unique technology that reduces emissions by up to 80%, making them a popular choice for roasters who are concerned about environmental impact. Loring's machines are also known for their energy efficiency, which can help roasters save on operating costs. However, their machines may not offer the same level of control as other brands.
  4. Proaster: Proaster is a South Korean company that has been producing coffee roasting machines since 2003. They are known for their affordable yet high-quality machines. Proaster's machines offer precise temperature control and are easy to use, making them a popular choice for smaller roasting businesses. However, their machines may not be as durable as some of the other brands on this list.
  5. Giesen: Giesen is a Dutch company that has been making coffee roasting machines since the 1990s. They are known for their reliable and efficient machines. Giesen's machines offer precise temperature control and easy-to-use software, making them a favorite among roasters who value consistency. However, their machines can be expensive, and some roasters may find them less innovative than other brands.

When it comes to getting the very best roast, the experts pay attention to several factors. First, they carefully select high-quality green coffee beans that are free from defects. They then use a roasting machine that allows them to precisely control the temperature, airflow, and time of the roast. They also pay close attention to the color and aroma of the beans to determine when they are fully roasted. Finally, they carefully store the roasted beans in a cool, dry place to preserve their flavor and aroma. By paying attention to these factors, expert roasters can create complex and nuanced roasts that showcase the unique flavors of the beans.

Want to Roast at Home?

There are certainly some secrets to coffee roasting that at home can help achieve a high-quality roast. Here are a few:
  1. Start with high-quality beans: The quality of your coffee will largely depend on the quality of your beans. Choose fresh, high-quality beans that are free from defects.
  2. Pay attention to the roast level: The roast level can greatly affect the flavor of the coffee. Different roast levels will bring out different flavor profiles, so it's important to experiment and find the right roast level for your taste preferences.
  3. Control the temperature: The temperature of the roasting process is crucial. Different coffee varieties require different temperature ranges for optimal roasting, and it's important to carefully control the temperature throughout the roast.
  4. Practice consistency: Consistency is key when it comes to coffee roasting. Try to repeat the same process every time you roast to ensure consistent quality.

Yes, you can definitely roast coffee at home! There are many machines designed specifically for home roasting, as well as other methods that can be used with equipment commonly found in the home.

Home coffee roasters range from simple and affordable models that use hot air to roast the beans, to more expensive and advanced machines that allow for precise control of temperature and airflow. There are also methods like pan roasting and oven roasting that can be done with equipment that most people have in their kitchens. However, these methods can be more difficult to control and may produce less consistent results than using a dedicated home roasting machine.

Regardless of the method used, home roasting can be a fun and rewarding way to experiment with different coffee flavors and find the perfect roast for your taste preferences.

Watch out for under-roasting or over-roasting

There are a few ways to tell if your coffee roast is under-roasted or over-roasted. Here are some common signs, along with picture examples:

Under-Roasted Coffee:
  1. Color: Under-roasted coffee will be lighter in color and may have a greenish tint.
  2. Aroma: Under-roasted coffee will have a grassy or hay-like aroma.
  3. Taste: Under-roasted coffee will have a sour or grassy taste, with little to no sweetness or complexity.

Over-Roasted Coffee:
  1. Color: Over-roasted coffee will be dark brown to black in color and may have an oily sheen.
  2. Aroma: Over-roasted coffee will have a burnt or smoky aroma.
  3. Taste: Over-roasted coffee will have a bitter, charred taste, with little to no sweetness or complexity.

It's important to note that the ideal roast level is subjective and will depend on personal taste preferences. Some people prefer a light roast with more acidity and fruity notes, while others prefer a darker roast with more body and caramelized flavors. Experimenting with different roast levels is the best way to find your personal favorite.

Great Coffee Recipes You Can Make at Home!

Try Out These Recipes, and Experiment with Your Own Variations.

First, Our Favorite: Hazelnut Morning Espresso

Our espresso maker is one of the classic aluminum stovetop espresso makers (Click to see) from Italy.   Ours is a 3-serving size.  We use freshly ground beans, ground fine, and filtered water.  It takes 4 minutes to draw the espresso.  During this time we heat the creamer.   We use a Hazelnut flavored dairy creamer; the fewer the additives, the better the creamer will taste and will be healthier - so we do not recommend sugar-free or fat-free creamers.  Pour out exactly 1/3 cup of creamer and warm it in the microwave. Once it is heated, we use a 'frother wand' (Click to see) to foam it up, and then put in the Espresso, to mix with the creamer.  Now pour into your serving glasses.

If your espresso maker is not the 3cup variety, then you have to modify the amount of creamer.  Do not make it too sweet - you still want to taste the espresso!

This is so simple, yet it produces the perfect cup of flavored Espresso!  And if its later in the day, add a little rum !
