This New Study is Looking Good!

There are a lot of good reasons to drink coffee - and now it turns out, there is one more.

In a new experiment in mice, researches found that coffee can help keep the eye healthy.

It appears that Chlorogenic Acid, an antioxidant in coffee, prevents age-related retinal degeneration. In general, it may also help prevent other age-related eye diseases This is great news!

And it matches other findings that many people who live to be over 90, often are coffee drinkers - and have good vision.

Coffee Can Help the Retina
The study was done by researchers in the US and in S. Korea.  If coffee can help prevent age-related eye disease, it will be a simple way for people to keep healthy.  In the experiment, mice were treated with Nitric Oxide, creating oxidative stress and free radicals. This led to some retinal degeneration in the mice.

However, mice that had been given CLA (Chloregnic Acid) before the Nitric Oxide, showed no eye problems or degeneration. The CLA appears to have protected them.  This was a very clear experiment to conduct; the Retina is tissue at the back of the eye, and has one of the highest metabolic rates of any tissue, so it needs a lot of Oxygen. It gets damaged easily when deprived of Oxygen.

It is not clear however, if coffee will help the Retina for other causes of Retina degeneration.  The original study article has more details. Coffee studies are finding more and more health benefits; we also reported recently on how Coffee can help reduce cancer, Diabetes, and many other health benefits; read more here.
