History of the French Press and how to Brew the Perfect Cup!

The French Press, also known as a press pot or plunger pot, has a history dating back to the 19th century. Its origins can be traced to France, where it was initially patented by a Frenchman named Attilio Calimani in 1929. However, it was Marcel Proust, another French inventor, who improved upon the design and popularized the modern version of the French Press in the 1950s.
Why the French Press Brews Flavorful Coffee: The French Press brewing method is celebrated for its ability to produce a rich and full-bodied cup of coffee due to its immersion-style brewing and metal mesh filter. Unlike drip coffee methods that use paper filters, the French Press allows coffee oils and fine particles to remain in the brew, contributing to a robust flavor profile.

Brewing:

  1. Gather Your Equipment:
    • French Press
    • Coarsely ground coffee beans
    • Hot water just below boiling
    • Stirring utensil
    • Timer
  2. Preheat the French Press:
    • Pour a small amount of hot water into the French Press to preheat it. This helps maintain the brewing temperature.
  3. Add Coffee Grounds:
    • Add coarsely ground coffee to the preheated French Press. Use a ratio of about 1:15 to 1:17 coffee-to-water for a strong and flavorful brew.
  4. Blooming (Optional):
    • Pour a small amount of hot water over the coffee grounds to saturate them. Allow it to bloom for about 30 seconds, releasing trapped gases and enhancing flavor extraction.
  5. Add Remaining Water:
    • Slowly pour the remaining hot water over the coffee grounds, ensuring even saturation.
  6. Stir:
    • Gently stir the coffee-water mixture with a utensil to ensure even extraction.
  7. Place the Lid and Wait:
    • Place the lid with the plunger raised but not yet pressed down.
    • Let the coffee steep for about 4 minutes.
  8. Press the Plunger:
    • Slowly press down the plunger, using even pressure. This separates the coffee grounds from the liquid.
  9. Pour and Enjoy:
    • Pour the brewed coffee into your cup, and savor the rich aroma and flavor.

The Ultimate French Press Experience with Gourmet French Roast Coffee Beans:

Pairing a French Press with gourmet French Roast coffee beans can create an exquisite coffee experience. The French Roast beans, known for their bold and intense flavor, complement the French Press method perfectly. The coarsely ground French Roast beans allow for maximum extraction of their deep flavors, resulting in a cup of coffee that boasts:
  • A robust body with notes of dark chocolate, caramel, and smoky undertones.
  • A smooth and velvety texture that coats the palate.
  • A well-rounded flavor profile that balances bitterness with the natural sweetness of the beans.
  • Aromatic oils that infuse the brew with an enticing fragrance.

In this harmonious combination of a carefully selected brewing method and premium beans, the French Press elevates the French Roast coffee experience to what many consider the pinnacle of coffee enjoyment.

A History of Borosilicate Glass and why it's Safe for Food & Drink

Introduction to Borosilicate Glass: Borosilicate glass is a specialized type of glass known for its unique properties that make it highly suitable for a variety of applications, particularly in the realm of food and drink containers. Its composition includes significant amounts of boron oxide, which gives it distinctive attributes such as high thermal shock resistance, excellent durability, and resistance to chemical corrosion. These qualities have made it a popular choice for laboratory glassware, cookware, and various other products that come into contact with food and beverages.

Historical Background: The history of borosilicate glass dates back to the late 19th century. German glassmaker Otto Schott, in collaboration with physicist Ernst Abbe and chemist Carl Zeiss, developed the first borosilicate glass under the brand name "Duran" in the late 1800s. This breakthrough was driven by the need for glass materials that could withstand rapid temperature changes without shattering. The initial application was primarily in scientific glassware, but its benefits soon extended to other fields, including culinary and household items.

Key Characteristics and Safety for Food and Drink:

  1. Thermal Shock Resistance: One of the most significant features of borosilicate glass is its exceptional thermal shock resistance. This property allows the glass to endure rapid temperature changes without cracking or breaking. When hot food or beverages are placed in borosilicate glass containers, they can withstand sudden exposure to cold conditions without fracturing. This is in stark contrast to regular glass and plastics, which can crack or warp under similar conditions.
  2. Durability: Borosilicate glass is known for its strength and durability. It is less prone to scratches, chips, and cracks compared to regular glass and plastics. This durability not only extends the lifespan of borosilicate glass containers but also reduces the likelihood of any potential contamination due to compromised structural integrity.
  3. Chemical Inertness: Borosilicate glass is chemically inert, meaning it doesn't react with most substances it comes into contact with, including acidic or alkaline foods and beverages. This property ensures that the glass won't leach harmful chemicals or flavors into the contents, preserving the purity of the food or drink.
  4. Non-Porous Surface: Unlike some plastics, borosilicate glass has a non-porous surface. This characteristic prevents the absorption of odors, flavors, or stains from previous contents, further ensuring the quality and taste of the food or drink stored within.

Safety Compared to Plastic Containers: Borosilicate glass foodware is generally considered safer than plastic containers for several reasons:
  1. Chemical Leaching: Many plastics, especially when exposed to heat or acidic foods, can leach potentially harmful chemicals into the contents. This is a concern for long-term health, as these chemicals can mimic hormones and have adverse effects on the human body. Borosilicate glass, being chemically inert, eliminates this risk.
  2. Durability and Longevity: As mentioned earlier, borosilicate glass is highly durable and less likely to develop scratches or cracks over time. Plastics can deteriorate with use, potentially creating areas where bacteria can thrive and compromising the container's structural integrity.
  3. Environmental Impact: Borosilicate glass is more environmentally friendly than many plastics. It is recyclable and doesn't contribute to the issues associated with plastic waste, such as ocean pollution and microplastic contamination.
  4. Retaining Purity: Unlike some plastics, borosilicate glass doesn't retain flavors or odors from previous contents, ensuring that your food and beverages taste as intended.

In short, Borosilicate glass's history is rooted in scientific advancements, and its unique properties make it an ideal choice for food and drink containers. Its thermal shock resistance, durability, chemical inertness, and non-porous surface contribute to its safety and superiority over plastic containers in terms of preserving the quality and safety of the items it holds.

Warning: Going to the Coffee Shop Can Raise Your Cholesterol Level

The Method of Brewing Is the Main Factor

Picture
French Press (Unfiltered) Coffee
Heart disease is the #1 killer in the US. Did you know that how coffee is brewed determines whether it raises Cholesterol?  For some, this is a serious problem.

Your favorite coffee shop is not telling you about this, either!

In this article we explore how this works and what you can do to protect yourself.

ANYONE with a Cholesterol issue should learn about this.   Coffees made from Espresso machines, French Press, and other brewing methods that do not have a paper filter, may put you at risk for higher Cholesterol.  So if you want a decafe, and your coffee shop will only do it on the Espresso machine, that might be a problem.
There are oils in coffee called Terpenes.  These oils can cause the body to produce more Cholesterol.  People do not realize that some of the cholesterol in your blood is not just from eating, but is in fact produced by your liver.  There are various reasons for why the body makes Cholesterol; but too much and you get a buildup in the arteries.

Drinking UN-filtered coffee is the Terpenes oils are in coffee. So that includes the Espresso machine, and the French Press; these put you at risk.  Your favorite Latte or Cappuccino will likely contain these oils.  Its important to learn because no one yet found all the causes of heart disease; people keep dying unnecessarily.  So if those at risk can eliminate one of those causes, that's huge!

It appears that the paper filter in drip coffee makers does remove the Terpenes oils.

So who should be concerned?  Anyone with a history of heart disease, and anyone with risk factors.  If you mom or your grandfather has had heart problems, you might be at risk - and should have second thoughts about any non-filtered coffees.

If your family has no history of heart disease, and you are not overweight and not a smoker, then you probably have low risk for Cholesterol-related problems - and thus a French Press, or anything from an Espresso machine, should be fine.

We are talking with various local and 'chain' coffee shops about this, and will do a followup report so you know who is addressing this issue, and who is not.   Actually you can tell easily - when you walk into a coffee shop or restaurant, and they are brewing decaf in their drip machine all day, and all night, then you have the health option to get a decaf brewed by paper filter.  Now in some coffee shops, they are not aware of this issue or even worse, they care more about profit's than the convenience and health of their customers - and so they refuse to brew decaf with a paper filter.  Its hard to understand why a coffee shop would refuse.

What makes matters worse, in terms of heart health, is that there is some strong evidence now that sugar can cause a rise in Cholesterol levels.  The liver reacts to sugar as part of its metabolism.  And think where you encounter a lot of sugar: at the coffee shop, with your flavored and sweetened Latte, and those tasty pastries they are always tempting you with.  So its a double-edged sword..

We are hoping to find some flexibility in independent coffee shops, and in the big chains too.  Stay tuned.

And now for some good news; there is one coffee press that includes a paper filter - it is called the Aeropress, and its quite popular now - you can read our review, and here is a picture of one:

You can keep  up with this topic by using Google News search, which also has a news alert/subscription option, and ask your doctor. It will help to educate your local coffee shop; have them read this article, and do some online research too.

It is very unfortunate that coffee shops do not post information about this.  Being pro-active about health is important.
