The Gourmet Coffees Market is Large, and Ever-Evolving

There is a lot happening in the coffee market, and that is true every week.  In this blog post we will give some of the recent news related to gourmet coffees around the world.

For the foreseeable future, a big factor in the coffee market will be climate change; affecting crops, farmers, prices, and product quality.

Recent Coffee News:

  • There continue to be new coffees, including pods, infused with Marijuana; but it is a niche market.
  • A professor has a infused coffee with Resveratrol (found in grapes - and wine) - read more.
  • There is a growing movement in California to label coffee as having carcinogenic chemicals.
  • Actor Hugh Jackman has a network of socially conscious coffee shops, supporting health initiatives.
  • Coffee is booming in Brasil.
  • Coffee seems healthy - for many reasons - and you get most benefit with that early-morning cup.
  • Climate Change bringing warnings over food security - read more here.

You can find out more about coffee using our Custom Coffee Search Engine, which filters out many non-coffee results!

Ever had Coffee Soda?

Coffee-flavored soda is coming!

Picture
Believe it or not, and like it or not, coffee-flavored soda is coming.

This will no doubt be popular, especially with younger consumers; but it will come at a price - of yet another sugary drink.

Will consumers accept it?  Will it be a healthy choice?
The idea seems to be that coffee lovers would have their brewed coffee in the morning, and then coffee soda's the rest of the day. Its yet another attempt to save the soda industry, which is in decline.

Many company's are working on various kinds of coffee drinks that can be consumed all day.  One that we like a lot are coffee-flavored Kombucha drinks, because they have less sugar - and are healthy for you, unlike soda.

JAB Holdings is a leader in this area, as they own Dr. Pepper (which is #3 in soda;s) and a lot of coffee brand/restaurant chains including  Keurig Green Mountain, Peet’s, Stumptown Roasters, Panera, Caribou, Au Bon Pain, Krispy Kreme, Intelligentsia and Jacobs Douwe Egberts.

Cold brew coffees are another form of coffee that is aimed at the afternoon consumer.  The soda market will be dominated by large companies; Pepsi makes Starbucks offering, and Coke makes them for Dunkin' Donuts and McDonalds.  Stumptown even offers a "Sparkling Cold Brew", which combines two trends into one product.

One thing is for sure - the coffee industry is always innovating, and has a huge array of products to choose from.  Consumers like to have choice, so there are benefits - but it would be nice if health were taken more seriously in these new products.

National Coffee Day 2017

September 29 is the date for the US

National Coffee Day is upon us - if you live the US, that is!

The National Coffee Day actually varies, around the world - anywhere from early April in China, all the way to October 1 in Japan; but September 29 is the most common date.

For a full list of these dates, checkout this Wikipedia article.

There is a lot more though, to this day!

You can find a free cup of coffee in many places around the US.  This includes Dunkin' Donuts, Cinnabon, Krispy Kreme, Tim Hortons, and Pilot Flying J (located often along freeways).

Our bank serves free coffee every day to customers, and Home Depot services free coffee every day to contractors (but they do not actually check).

We feel that the best way to celebrate this day, is to go out and find a local coffee roaster; get some fresh roasted beans, and brew a pot at home - that will be the best cup of coffee you will have all week.  Another way to celebrate this day is try a new kind of coffee.  Go to your local coffeeshop and try something new!   We recently started drinking a double espresso with just a splash of creme; its very good, has some natural sugar - and no added sugar.  People who have never had Espresso might be surprised by how good this is, especially if its made from fresh roasted beans, and if you drink with an open mind.

These National Coffee Days were partly intended to promote Fair Trade practices, to raise awareness of the economic plight of coffee farmers around the world.  So you can help - go out and buy some beans that are Fair Trade.  There is a similar movement called Direct Trade that aims to get an even higher wage for coffee farmers.

Coffee production is being affected by global warming.  This is a serious issue, it will be one more way that farmers are impacted, and it will also raise prices.   We all need to be aware of Climate Change, and to do what we can do slow it down.  Shade Grown Coffees are a great choice as it helps farmers - and helps forests.  You can contact your political leaders to ask for more to be done about Climate Change.
